
The same moment can require two different teaching choices: During a steep turn, the instructor can say, "Add back pressure now," or ask, "What is the altitude trend telling you?" One protects the flight immediately; the other may build recognition for the next attempt.
Good coaching knows when to ask and when to instruct directly.
A flight instructor should use questions when the learner has enough knowledge and time to analyze the event safely. Ask the student to replay what happened, identify the first meaningful change, compare the result with the correct standard, explain the risk, and choose the next action. Give direct instruction or intervene immediately when safety, aircraft control, a required procedure, or time-critical judgment demands it.
Instruction boundary: Question-based coaching is not a reason to withhold essential information or let an unsafe condition continue. The instructor remains responsible for supervision, accurate instruction, timely intervention, and the training decisions within the instructor's privileges.
Why questions improve flight instruction
An answer supplied by the instructor can solve the immediate discussion. A well-timed question can show whether the student understands the cue, procedure, risk, and reason behind the correction.
Questions help the instructor discover whether the student:
- remembers the objective;
- recognizes the relevant cue;
- understands the aircraft procedure;
- can interpret the available evidence;
- distinguishes observation from explanation;
- anticipates the next event;
- can make an appropriate go/no-go, continue, discontinue, or go-around decision;
- can transfer the lesson to a new scenario;
- can identify what remains unknown.
The FAA Aviation Instructor's Handbook discusses guided discussion, scenario-based training, effective communication, and learner-centered assessment. In each, the instructor organizes the learning rather than simply delivering a continuous stream of answers.
The question should serve a defined objective
Do not ask questions merely to make the student guess what the instructor is thinking. A useful question should help achieve one of five goals.
Recall
Confirm essential knowledge.
- What is the aircraft-specific target speed for this procedure?
- What limitation applies?
- What is the first priority in stall recovery?
- What is the school's go-around gate?
Observation
Reconstruct what actually happened.
- What changed first?
- Where was the airplane relative to the runway when drift began?
- When did vertical speed change?
- Which cue did you notice before the instructor prompt?
Interpretation
Connect evidence to the objective without pretending the cause is already known.
- Which recorded variable supports that conclusion?
- What other explanation could fit the same trace?
- What important context is missing?
- How did the wind or configuration affect the result?
Decision
Evaluate risk management.
- At what point was the approach no longer acceptable?
- What condition should trigger a go-around?
- Which landing area remains reachable after this change?
- What is the safest next action if the runway is occupied?
Transfer
Apply the concept beyond the exact repetition.
- How would this change in a stronger crosswind?
- What cue remains useful in a different airplane?
- How would higher density altitude affect the plan?
- What part of this simulator exercise should transfer to the aircraft, and what will not?
Ask questions at the right time
Before the lesson
Use questions to check preparation and establish the decision framework.
- What is today's primary objective?
- Which source controls the procedure?
- What conditions would make us change or stop the plan?
- What evidence will show that the objective was met?
- Which part do you expect to be most demanding?
During the flight
Use questions sparingly. Aircraft control, traffic, communication, and workload remain primary.
Good in-flight questions are short and operational:
- What is your next priority?
- Is the runway clear?
- What is the trend?
- What is your go-around gate?
- Which heading are you rolling out on?
Do not turn a high-workload maneuver into an oral exam. If the student cannot safely answer and fly, reduce the question or wait until the debrief.
After the flight
The debrief is the best place for deeper questions because the student can replay the event and compare multiple sources.
Use the FAA learner-centered sequence:
- Replay: What happened in order?
- Reconstruct: What could or should have been different?
- Reflect: Why did it matter?
- Redirect: What changes on the next attempt?
A practical coaching sequence
1. Start with the learner's replay
Ask:
Walk me through the maneuver from setup to recovery. Stop at the first point where the result began to differ from your plan.
Do not correct every detail immediately. Listen for the student's mental model and recognition timing.
2. Clarify the standard
Ask:
Which part of the ACS, POH/AFM, approved syllabus, or lesson objective applies here?
If the student does not know, teach the source. Do not force a guess about a safety-critical requirement.
3. Identify the first meaningful deviation
Ask:
Which variable or observation changed first, and what evidence supports that?
This prevents the debrief from focusing only on the final error.
4. Expose missing context
Ask:
What information would we need before deciding why it happened?
Possible missing context includes actual wind, rudder coordination, power setting, flap position, traffic, control feel, visual scan, or instructor assistance.
5. Ask for the risk consequence
Ask:
If this same pattern occurred closer to the ground, in traffic, or without instructor support, what could it affect?
Keep the scenario realistic and connected to the maneuver.
6. Ask for one next action
Ask:
What cue should trigger what action on the next attempt, and what result will show that it worked?
The instructor then confirms, modifies, or replaces the proposed action.
Scenario-based coaching examples
Steep-turn altitude loss
Instead of saying:
Pull more and hold 45 degrees.
Ask:
- Where did the altitude trend first change?
- What was the bank at that point?
- What outside pitch reference had you established?
- Did airspeed change before or after the altitude loss?
- What smaller action could you make as the bank passes 30 degrees?
The instructor still teaches the correct aircraft technique and intervenes if the maneuver becomes unsafe.
Crosswind landing drift
Ask:
- What was the difference between heading and ground track on final?
- When did the correction begin to fade?
- What did you see at the runway edge or centerline?
- Was the airplane aligned and free of side drift before touchdown?
- What condition should trigger the go-around next time?
Do not ask the data to prove rudder input or tire side load if those were not recorded.
Go-around with runway traffic
Ask:
- When did the runway conflict become apparent?
- What was the earliest safe decision point?
- What did you prioritize after applying the aircraft-specific go-around procedure?
- When would a lateral move toward the appropriate side improve visibility or avoid conflict?
- What ATC, parallel-runway, obstacle, or local-procedure considerations apply?
The correct answer depends on the aircraft procedure, traffic, ATC instruction, airport environment, and timing. Do not teach an automatic sidestep after every go-around.
Power-on stall entry
Ask:
- Which cues showed the angle of attack was increasing?
- What yaw tendency did you notice?
- What would heading alone fail to show about coordination?
- What is the first recovery priority?
- What action could create a secondary stall?
Ground reference maneuver
Ask:
- Where was groundspeed highest?
- Where should bank be greatest?
- How did wind change the turn radius and crab angle?
- What is the real operational skill behind this maneuver?
- How does it connect to traffic-pattern spacing or a forced-landing pattern?
Questions that do not work well
The hidden-answer question
Don't you think you should have added more right rudder?
The student is being asked to agree, not analyze.
Better:
What cues showed the airplane was not coordinated, and what correction did the aircraft procedure and instructor guidance call for?
The vague accusation
Why did you do that?
This can make the learner defensive and rarely identifies the phase or evidence.
Better:
What were you trying to accomplish when you changed pitch, and what happened next?
The stacked question
Why were you high, fast, off centerline, and late on the go-around?
Break it into sequence. Identify the first meaningful deviation before discussing the rest.
The trivia question
A question that tests an unrelated fact during a high-workload maneuver can distract from aircraft control. Ask only what serves the current objective.
The question with no safe time to answer
If a response would delay aircraft control, traffic avoidance, checklist action, or a required decision, instruct or intervene directly.
When the instructor should give the answer
Direct instruction is appropriate when:
- the learner has not been taught the concept or procedure;
- an aircraft limitation or safety-critical requirement must be clear;
- the student is confused about the controlling source;
- immediate action is required;
- the question would increase unsafe workload;
- the learner's answer could lead to an unauthorized or unsafe practice;
- a misconception must be corrected before further repetition;
- the instructor must demonstrate a new skill;
- the student is not yet ready for discovery-based practice.
Question-based coaching and direct teaching are complementary, not competing methods.

What should a pilot prove?
A useful pilot should show that question-led coaching improves recognition without delaying direct safety intervention. Define the baseline, responsible reviewers, representative users, support effort, errors, workarounds, privacy risks, and stop criteria before the first session. At the decision meeting, choose to scale, modify, extend, or stop.
How should implementation start?
Begin with one defined workflow, one representative cohort, a small instructor group, and a written baseline. Keep required records and approvals in their current systems until the school verifies accuracy, usability, support, privacy, export, and compliance behavior. Expand only after difficult cases and failure modes have been tested.

Frequently asked questions
Should a CFI answer a student's question with another question?
Sometimes. The response should help the student think, not avoid instruction. If the student lacks the required knowledge or safety depends on clarity, give the answer and teach it.
How many questions should be used in a debrief?
Use enough to reconstruct and redirect the lesson without turning the debrief into an interrogation. A few specific questions usually produce more learning than a long list disconnected from the objective.
Can questions replace demonstrations?
No. Some skills require explanation, demonstration, supervised practice, and feedback. Questions help the instructor assess understanding and decision-making.
Should an instructor ask questions during a stall or landing?
Only when the question is brief, appropriate to the learner, and does not interfere with safe aircraft control. Use the post-flight debrief for deeper analysis.
