A well-prepared student can still miss the point: The weather is reviewed, every checklist is ready, and the student arrives early - but cannot state the one skill the lesson is supposed to improve. The flight becomes a collection of maneuvers instead of a focused training event.

Preparation works best when it turns the last debrief into a specific objective, a mental rehearsal, and a plan for what evidence to capture next.

Prepare for the next flight lesson by reviewing the previous debrief, confirming one primary objective with the instructor, refreshing the applicable POH/AFM procedure and limitations, checking the expected operating conditions, chair-flying the sequence and decision gates, and arriving with specific questions. The goal is not to pre-teach yourself a new maneuver. It is to make the paid aircraft and instructor time more focused.

Operational boundary: The instructor, school, regulations, aircraft documents, and pilot in command determine what can be conducted. A student may not use a study plan, app, or simulator session to self-authorize solo flight or a maneuver outside current training and endorsements.

Step 1: Review the last lesson before choosing a new objective

Start with the final action from the previous debrief.

Ask:

  • What was the lesson objective?
  • What went well consistently?
  • Where did the first meaningful deviation begin?
  • Did I recognize it without prompting?
  • What correction did the instructor assign?
  • What question remained unanswered?
  • Did weather, traffic, fatigue, equipment, or workload materially affect the result?

Do not begin the next lesson with a list of ten unrelated weaknesses. Identify the one correction most likely to improve the next attempt.

Step 2: Confirm the lesson objective and completion standard

A useful objective is specific enough to brief and debrief.

Weak objective:

Work on landings.

Stronger objective:

Fly normal approaches using the school's stabilized-approach criteria, maintain centerline and wind correction, and make an early go-around whenever the approach is no longer within the plan.

Confirm which standard applies:

  • the instructor's developmental objective;
  • the current ACS task;
  • the school syllabus or approved curriculum;
  • the POH/AFM procedure;
  • a stage-check standard;
  • a regulatory or endorsement limitation.

The student should understand the destination standard without assuming that every learning attempt will be judged as a final practical test.

Step 3: Refresh the aircraft-specific procedure

Review the current POH/AFM, checklist, school procedure, and instructor guidance for the planned lesson.

Focus on the items that affect the objective:

  • configuration;
  • published airspeeds;
  • power or performance references;
  • limitations;
  • normal, abnormal, or emergency procedure boundaries;
  • trim and control sequence;
  • expected instrument indications;
  • go-around or discontinuation criteria.

Do not replace an aircraft-specific procedure with a generic online checklist. If two sources appear to conflict, bring the question to the instructor before flight.

Step 4: Prepare the flight information that matters

When a student will act as pilot in command, 14 CFR 91.103 requires the pilot to become familiar with all available information concerning the flight. Even during dual training, preparing the relevant information builds good operating habits.

Depending on the lesson, review:

  • weather reports and forecasts;
  • winds aloft and local surface winds;
  • NOTAMs and runway status;
  • airport information and traffic pattern procedures;
  • airspace and temporary flight restrictions;
  • runway lengths, surfaces, and declared distances when relevant;
  • aircraft performance, weight and balance, and fuel planning;
  • density altitude and temperature effects;
  • likely traffic and ATC workload;
  • alternates and stop conditions.

Preparation should match the lesson. A local maneuver lesson and a cross-country lesson require different depth, but neither should begin with avoidable uncertainty about the airport, aircraft, or conditions.

Step 5: Chair-fly the sequence and the decision gates

Chair flying is a verbal and physical rehearsal of the procedure without pretending that the cockpit environment is fully reproduced.

Rehearse:

  1. the setup;
  2. the visual and instrument references;
  3. the expected sequence;
  4. the first likely error cue;
  5. the correction;
  6. the stop, go-around, or discontinue condition;
  7. the recovery or transition to the next phase.

Say the sequence aloud. Move your hands only in a way that reinforces the correct flow. Do not memorize an oversimplified script that conflicts with the POH/AFM or instructor technique.

Step 6: Use simulation for the right purpose

A desktop simulator can support familiarization, procedure flow, instrument cross-check, radio rehearsal, navigation, and repeated scenario setup. It does not automatically reproduce aircraft control feel, peripheral cues, motion, traffic risk, or the consequences of a poor decision.

Consumer simulator time is not automatically loggable aeronautical experience. Logging or receiving credit requires an approved device, the applicable regulation, and any required instructor supervision or record.

Use simulator practice to answer a defined question, such as:

  • Can I complete the pattern and go-around flow without losing heading awareness?
  • Can I level from a climb without chasing altitude and airspeed?
  • Can I identify the point where the approach becomes unstable?
  • Can I complete the checklist flow while maintaining the assigned instrument scan?

Stop if the session begins reinforcing a technique the instructor has not approved.

Step 7: Prepare your personal readiness

The FAA's aeronautical decision-making guidance encourages pilots to consider personal condition as part of risk management. Before the lesson, evaluate factors such as illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, emotion, hydration, nutrition, and sleep.

Preparation also includes practical details:

  • certificates and required documents;
  • headset, view-limiting device, charts, or training materials;
  • clothing suitable for temperature and aircraft ventilation;
  • enough time to avoid rushing;
  • payment, scheduling, and aircraft-access requirements;
  • questions about any medical, legal, or training limitation directed to the appropriate qualified person.

A student who arrives rushed, hungry, exhausted, or unprepared may spend the lesson managing avoidable workload.

Step 8: Prepare three questions

Bring questions that improve the lesson plan.

Examples:

  • At what point did you first see the approach become unstable last time?
  • Which outside reference should I prioritize as the bank becomes established?
  • What wind information should we use for the local training area?
  • What is the aircraft-specific cue for beginning the level-off?
  • Which part of the sequence should I practice in the simulator before we fly?
  • What would make you discontinue this maneuver or change the lesson today?

A good question is anchored to an event, standard, or decision.

A student is scheduled for short-field takeoffs and landings. The previous debrief showed that touchdown accuracy was not the first problem. The approach was consistently high because the student turned base too close to the runway and then tried to force the airplane down.

The student prepares by:

  • reviewing the airport diagram and expected pattern;
  • reading the aircraft's published short-field procedure;
  • checking the forecast wind and density altitude;
