The conversation starts too broadly: The student says, "I just cannot do steep turns." The CFI hears frustration, but not yet a teachable question.

The conversation changes when the student can say where the problem begins, what was observed, and which cue or action needs clarification.

Tell your CFI exactly where the maneuver becomes difficult, what you observed, what standard or objective you were trying to meet, and what you need help understanding. Bring one relevant example rather than a general statement such as "I am bad at landings." A specific conversation gives the instructor something that can be demonstrated, explained, practiced, and reviewed on the next attempt.

Training boundary: A student should not use an article, app, video, or self-diagnosis to replace aircraft-specific instruction. The CFI evaluates the complete performance, teaches the procedure, sets the lesson standard, and decides what practice is appropriate.

Why this conversation matters in real flight training

A difficult maneuver rarely improves because the student simply repeats it without a clearer objective. Repetition can be useful when the student understands the cue, action, and standard. Repetition can also reinforce a late correction, an incorrect sight picture, or a misunderstanding of the aircraft procedure.

The practical reason to speak up is not comfort alone. Unresolved confusion can affect:

  • aircraft control;
  • traffic awareness;
  • workload;
  • recognition of an unstable or unsafe condition;
  • the timing of a go-around or discontinuation decision;
  • confidence in the correct procedure;
  • the student's ability to practice independently within authorization.

The FAA Aviation Instructor's Handbook describes effective assessment as factual, constructive, organized, thoughtful, and specific. It also says criticism should respect the learner and, when appropriate, be delivered privately. Those principles apply in both directions: the student should bring factual observations, and the instructor should turn those observations into specific guidance.

Replace a broad complaint with a precise training question

Weak opening:

I just cannot do steep turns.

Stronger opening:

In the right steep turn, altitude begins to decrease as the bank reaches about 40 degrees. I notice it after the vertical-speed trend has already changed. What outside cue should I use earlier, and what correction do you want me to make as the bank is established?

The stronger version identifies:

  • the maneuver;
  • the direction;
  • the phase;
  • the first observable change;
  • the student's recognition timing;
  • the specific instruction requested.

The student is not claiming to know the cause. The student is giving the CFI a useful place to begin.

Prepare the conversation in six parts

1. Name the exact objective

Use the lesson objective, the applicable ACS task, the POH/AFM procedure, or the instructor's developmental standard.

Examples:

  • maintain the selected bank and altitude in a steep turn;
  • establish a stabilized short-field approach at the aircraft-specific speed;
  • control heading and coordination during a power-on stall entry;
  • recognize the go-around trigger and transition to the aircraft-specific climb procedure;
  • maintain runway track and alignment during a crosswind landing.

Do not start with a score. Start with what the maneuver was supposed to demonstrate.

2. Identify the phase where the difficulty begins

Break the maneuver into phases:

  • planning and setup;
  • entry;
  • established maneuver;
  • recognition of a deviation;
  • correction;
  • recovery or rollout;
  • transition to the next phase.

The largest deviation may appear later than the first error. A landing that floats well beyond the intended point may have become difficult much earlier, when the approach was high, fast, or not stabilized. A steep-turn altitude loss may begin as bank increases, before the student notices the altimeter trend.

3. State what you observed without diagnosing it

Useful observations include:

  • altitude decreased during the first half of the turn;
  • rollout began after the assigned heading arrived;
  • the approach path moved right of centerline as the wind correction was reduced;
  • eIAS increased during the final segment while the airplane continued to float;
  • the go-around decision occurred after the second bounce;
  • the instructor added a rudder prompt during the stall entry.

Avoid unsupported conclusions such as:

  • the wind caused everything;
  • the sensor was wrong;
  • the airplane always does that;
  • the instructor's method is the problem;
  • the score proves the maneuver was satisfactory.

Label an explanation as a question or hypothesis until the instructor evaluates it.

4. Bring one useful piece of evidence

Choose the smallest amount of evidence that answers the training question:

  • one replay segment;
  • one annotated screenshot;
  • one pair of comparable attempts;
  • a short note about what the student saw or felt;
  • the relevant POH/AFM procedure;
  • the applicable ACS element;
  • the wind, runway, traffic, or configuration context.

More graphs do not automatically create a better debrief. One clear event often produces a more productive discussion than a complete flight with every variable displayed.

5. Ask for the cue, action, and result

A useful coaching question asks for three things.

Cue: What should tell the student to act?

Action: What specific response should the student make?

Result: What should change if the response is correct?

Examples:

  • What outside reference should I establish before the bank reaches 45 degrees?
  • At what point do you want me to begin rollout for this airplane and rate of turn?
  • What should I see before I decide the approach is no longer stable?
  • Which part of the go-around sequence should receive my full attention first?
  • What wind correction should remain through touchdown and rollout?
  • What indication tells me that I am correcting too aggressively?

6. Agree on one next objective

End with one observable objective for the next attempt.

Example:

On the next right steep turn, I will establish the outside pitch reference as the bank passes 30 degrees, use the instructor-planned power change, and cross-check altitude before reaching 45 degrees of bank.

That objective is more useful than "hold altitude better" because it names the phase, cue, action, and review point.

Use the FAA learner-centered sequence

The FAA Aviation Instructor's Handbook describes a four-stage collaborative assessment process.

Replay

The student reconstructs what happened in sequence. The instructor listens for gaps or differences between the account and the observed performance.

Reconstruct

Student and instructor identify what could, would, or should have been done differently.

Reflect

The student connects the event to the lesson objective, standard, risk, and learning.

Redirect

The discussion changes the next plan: a different explanation, a demonstration, a narrower task, simulator preparation, a revised cue, or another form of practice.

A conversation about a difficult maneuver becomes productive when it reaches redirect. Simply agreeing that the maneuver was difficult does not change the next repetition.

Three realistic examples

Example 1: Steep turns

The student says:

Both turns finish near the entry heading, but the right turn loses altitude as the bank becomes established. The left turn is more stable. Can we compare my outside references and control sequence in each direction? I would like you to demonstrate the right entry, then have me repeat only the entry and first 90 degrees.

This request narrows the task and asks for a comparison that the instructor can observe.

Example 2: Short-field landing

The student says:

The touchdown was inside the intended zone, but the approach was fast and the airplane floated. FlytWERX eIAS increased during the late correction. Example 3: Power-on stall

The student says:

I understand that reducing angle of attack is the first recovery priority, but I am not recognizing the yaw early enough in the entry. Can you show me the visual, sound, and control cues you want me to notice before the full stall? I do not want to use heading alone as proof of coordination.

This asks the CFI to teach cues that portable telemetry may not record.

When two instructors teach different techniques

Different instructors may use different words, visual references, demonstration styles, or teaching progressions. That does not automatically mean one is wrong.

Ask the instructors to separate four layers:

  • Regulation or limitation: what is legally required or prohibited;
  • ACS or program standard: what performance is evaluated;
  • POH/AFM or approved procedure: what the aircraft manufacturer or operator specifies;
  • Technique: one acceptable way to achieve the objective within those boundaries.

A useful question is:

Which part of this is required by the aircraft procedure or standard, and which part is the technique you prefer me to use?

If conflicting guidance affects safety, aircraft limitations, endorsements, or school procedures, ask the chief instructor or appropriate training authority to resolve it before further practice.

If the student does not feel heard

First, make the request more specific:

  • ask for a private conversation;

  • ask what evidence would change the instructor's interpretation;
  • confirm the next objective in plain language.

If a genuine safety concern, repeated communication breakdown, inappropriate conduct, or unresolved procedural conflict remains, use the school's established process or speak with the chief instructor or management. Keep the discussion factual and focused on the training event, the applicable standard, and the needed resolution.
